Due to Budget Constraints, the Light at the End of the Tunnel Has Been Extinguished

It's all about the Benjamins (or in our case, the Georges). My little ER, without any concrete plans except "it's going to happen", is going Urgent Care at some point in the next 3 or 4 months.  I will be out of a job.

No need for critical care nurses in that setting.  Certainly they can get cheaper staff.  Hours of operation will be slashed.  There will be one nurse.  Good bye, lab peeps.  The will only need phlebotomists.  See ya, X-ray techs.  You're losing hours as well.  Congratulations PT you get to keep your jobs.

Stress eating at work has become the new hobby, along with speculation, gallows humor, and the stages of grief.  We sent Beth out for ice cream the other night and she came back with three gallons, along with hot fudge, whipped cream and potato chips.  Screw the ice cream, chips dipped in hot fudge with whipped cream?  DELICIOUS!!!

I have to say that the one silver lining is that my resume is updated annually at tax time, so I am in a better position than some of my colleagues who haven't had one in years.

I'm sad.  I'm not ready to job hunt at age 58.  I can't physically do 12 hour shifts.

My job has become a Death Watch.

My condolences.

Learned the currently-updated-resume lesson awhile back.

About five years after it's too late to fix, the public is going to learn the hazards of getting what they wish for, instead of what they need, so I hope they won't miss grandma when the closest still-functional ER is only a helpful hour or two away, with a three-hour wait to be seen.

Best wishes on your hopefully happy landing.

Shit. At 56, I hear you in full volume. I have to freelance babysitting and doing private duty home health care... Job searches are the worst at our age and yes, the thought of a twelve-hour day just makes me weep with exhaustion.

I feel your pain. One of my colegues was laid off last week, age 59 with a semi-invalid husband dependant on her insurance. The HR hatchet woman sent to do the deed thereatened her with never being able to be hired by any hospital in our system of 12 hospitals because she was crying.
I am 63 and waiting for the axe to fall - I think they are trying to get rid of the older more expensive nurses. And I just read about how recent court decisions have made it nearly impossible to bring an age discrimination suit to court. NUrsing is such a happy and blessed profession. -Orfyn RN

Nooooooooo you cannot leave! I will be all alone in my little universe of bitching. FYI - I tried to get a job in the Nashville area but was soundly turned down for being not a sorta white male but rather a 54 y/o sorta white male. Poop orifices.

Heh, poop orifices!

Ugh- that sucks.

Any thought on moving out of a hospital setting? I'm in academic medicine and the nurses here usually only have 1 doc they work with. They're in clinic 1-2 days a week and MAY round with their doc as well. Plush gig, I think! ;)

As it happens I have a new plan. Got an email from an old ER nurse manager who would be happy to have me return. Then discovered a new MSN for Qualiy that sounded interesting! I shan't be destitute after all

Yeah, no. Never mind. False alarm
